Before Kiwanis…
Kevin McConnell was born into a Kiwanis family. As early as the age of two, Kevin was joining his father Jerry in Kiwanis projects and events with the Kiwanis Club of South-West Peoria in Division 20.
Jerry McConnell served as Club President (1969) and Lt. Governor (1973-74), and on a number of district committees thereafter (most notably, Key Club Administrator 1977-84). As a result, Kevin has been reading club bulletins and the Illeiowan as long as he can remember. He also has attended nearly every Kiwanis District Convention since 1975. This historical perspective provides Kevin an idea of where we have been as an organization.
As he entered Peoria Woodruff High School, Kevin immediately joined Key Club. During his Key Club experience, he served the Illinois-Eastern Iowa District as District Bulletin Editor (1978-79) and District Secretary (1979-80). Prior to his senior year, he was elected as one of 12 Key Club International Trustees at the Key Club International Convention in San Diego.
Through this experience, Kevin earned great perspective about the important relationship between Kiwanis and its Service Leadership programs. As a result, Kevin has continued to give back through working with Builders Clubs, Key Clubs, and Circle K (at the club, divisional, and district levels). He knows why these relationships are important, and he also believes that developing future leaders through these organizations is one of Kiwanis’ most important missions.
